I’ve just found a Japanese version of American Apparel. It’s called Uniqlo and sells affordable clothing. Visit the website to learn more about this cool brand: www.uniqlo.com
Each time I’m in New York I have to stop at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum Shop. They have a great selection of design books and other little design treasures. My best advice? Don’t bring your credit card or you will spend waaay to much money on great books… I’ve been able to limit myself to buy only 3 this time around.
Spring is a design shop and an exhibition place at the same time. What’s interesting about Spring is that it’s not only a great place to find design gifts you want to buy for yourself, but the entire store is re-designed every season. You’ll find very interesting pieces like cushion with the Top 10 Google search on them or Dexter dinnerware.
“Spring is a starting point, an idea base, an exhibition space and related store promoting design and art through curated shows and highlighted products. Structured on four principal shows a year, we work with a pool of talented guest artists, designers and curators to create cohesive, informative and, above all, interesting exhibits. It is an ambitious and exciting project that promotes thinking, explores new exchanges and provides a link to, and association with, innovative projects.” - Blurb taken from Spring’s website.
Even if you don’t have enough money to buy anything at Moss just check it out because it’s really one of the best places to find great design in SOHO. There are 4 different showrooms to see - don’t miss the one in the basement!
We met Monkey at the Brooklyn Flea Market on Saturday: his stuff was absolutely amazing and original. Wrecords By Monkey is a Brooklyn-based design company that bridges the worlds of fashion, art and music. Using reclaimed vinyl records, they create handmade jewelry like bracelets, necklaces, earings, rings and t-shirts. Veronique could not resist the temptation and bought 2 really cool bracelets.
Fred Flare is a great shop and colorful place where you can find all sorts of things like astronaut ice cream, hats, gadgets, tapedeck USB recorders, books and other cool stuff. On the other side of the street be sure you stop at Eat Records.
And as I was researching the shop online, I found out that they also have a video podcast series on the iTunes Store and on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/user/fredflareinc

Eat Records is a new and used vinyl shop that also serves organic food and coffee. The ambiance is really interesting, the tables and chairs are unique and the music came from genuine old vinyl records playing. A really interseting hybrid of shop and café.
The Kidrobot shop in SOHO is the ultimate toy shop for designers and non-designers. Don’t even think about getting out this place without buying something… it’s just impossible. You may want to buy three different items just to put them in three separate bags (they are really cool)… Don’t go there at the beginning of your trip or you’ll spend all your money on those awesome figures.
